Silver Queen

The 2005 Silver Queen competition was held at Lytham Ex Club on Thursday 22nd September.

Twenty two players from across the Blackpool and Fylde League entered this six-round 10 minute chess tournament. 

Before the competition began, 2004 winner, Preston Club player Brett Lund advised one of the controllers that he had forgotten to bring with him the Silver Queen Trophy.   This may have been an oversight on his part, but having won the tournament 8 out of the last 10 attempts, maybe he was more than quietly confident that he would retain his trophy.   Indeed, he did with a fabulous six wins out of six games.  Neil Coward from Blackpool Chess Club was 2nd with 5 points out of six, and he was unbeaten in all six games.   Preston player Malcolm Peacock was third with 4.5 out of 6 while only 1.5 points separated the next 11 placed players.     The below 100 grading prize fell to Lytham's Steve Willder with 3.5 out of 6.

While the indomitable Bill Weeks scored 0 from six and finished last of 22, the Controllers Special Prize went to Lytham's very young Philip Connolly for not only scoring 1.5 points but for succeeding in keeping awake to complete the last two rounds.

So, well done Brett as the Silver Queen Champion yet again, and a big congratulations to all who took part in making this a successful evening.
