Div A
Blackpool 1 v Lytham Ex 1 3-2
A cracker at the start of the season with every player up to county standard but Blackpool had an ace up their sleeve - Neil Coward on bottom board! A player with vast experience of match and tournament play - he outplayed Phil Raynor after the latter had opened up the position.
Preston 1 v Preston 2 3½-1½
Preston 2 (last year's champions) were heading for a draw with the last few minutes of the match ticking away then disaster struck: Connor Reaney on Board 2 missed a simple winning move after making an imaginative sacrifice.
Div B
Poulton 1 v Morecambe 2-2
Last season's champions against last season's runners-up. For Poulton, George Ellison beat Phil Seery who was unbeaten last season. Oleg Cukov's, the Fylde champion, finished second best to Morecambe's captain, Norman Blade. Simon Rogers lost to Chris Heald. Ken Gorman had a great win against the higher graded Frank Rushworth to save the match.
Lytham Ex 2 v Lytham Ex 3 2-2
Lytham's 3rd team contained an exceptionally strong 2nd team. Phil Copeland recovered from losing the exchange to force a draw. Mick Wood made his debut in the League but could not contain Leo Ainsworth's powerful attack. Kostas Domoras found holes for his knights in Phil Raynor's defences and chalked up the 3rd team's only win. Pat Coleman and Lynne Morrison had an even game - neither player was able to force a win.
Div C
Poulton 2 v Poulton 3 0-4
Poulton 2 suffered an unexpected whitewash at the hands of their third string.
Blackpool 2 v Lytham Ex 4 2-2
Last season's champions, Lytham Ex 4, made a faltering start to the new season but managed to salvage a point thanks to Ricky Lord and Charles Cooper. 92 year old Charles was only beaten once in ten outings last season winning six of his games and it looks as if he intends to continue in the same vein this season.
Lytham Ex 4 v Lytham Ex 5 3-1
A comfortable win for Lytham's fourth team despite the fifth team fielding veterans, Len Gibbins and Bill Weeks.
Bispham v Preston 3 0-4
Although Preston 3 normally play inexperienced members of the club in their side, on this occasion they had three strong players on view. Bispham, without their top board, Blaine McGrady, who was unbeaten last year, were overwhelmingly outgraded and not surprisingly suffered a whitewash.
