First Round Results

Most games followed the “form-book” in this round. George nevertheless found Jon Wright a stronger opponent than his grading would suggest and only won after a very tough game. Phil Raynor’s very creditable draw with Black against Paul Evans was the biggest surprise of the round.

Abigail played well in the opening but missed a tactical resource in a sharp position. Michael’s game against Les was close for 20 moves but Michael then took control of an important file and broke through.

Ian Wright obtained easy equality against Leo in the opening but lost after throwing away two pawns in the middle game.

Div A

Blackpool 1 v Preston 2  3½ - 1½

Blackpool are the strongest side in the division.  They took the title last year and, on this form, are favourites to retain the title.  Preston's Malcolm Peacock surprisingly defeated Darryl Wolstencroft and Kenny Quinn excelled in taking half a point from Steve Lamb.

Division B

Poulton 1 v Lytham 2  2½ - 1½

A surprise win for Poulton who were outgraded by 40 points by Lytham.  There were outstanding results for Abigail Pritchard, who drew against Lynne Morrison on her debut for Poulton 1st team, and Simon Rogers, who scored a vital point against Leo Ainsworth.

Blackpool 2 v Morecambe  ½ - 3½

Morecambe were far too strong for Blackpool.  Michael Parker did well to hold John Lyth to a draw.

Division C

Poulton 3 v Lytham Ex 4  3½ - ½
