Fylde Individual Championship

Second Round Results

John Cooper (Lytham) ½ ½ Malcolm Peacock (Preston)
George Ellison (Poulton) 1 0 Michael Parker (Blackpool)
Doug Williams (Lytham) 0 1 Paul Evans (Blackpool)
Jon Wright (Blackpool) ½ ½ Oleg Cukovs (Poulton)
Phil Copeland (Lytham) 1 0 Dennis Davies (Blackpool)
Pat Coleman (Lytham) 0 1 Abigail Pritchard (Blackpool)
Les Hughes (Poulton) 1 0 Phil Raynor (Lytham)

Unlike Round 1, Round 2 produced a couple of surprise results.  Jon Wright's draw with Oleg Cukovs and Les Hughes' win over Phil Raynor.  This was Les Hughes' first win after propping up the Championship for three seasons and he played a very fine game to defeat Phil Raynor.

John Cooper was under pressure and in time trouble against Malcolm Peacock and considered himself fortunate to hold out for a draw.

Michael Parker sacrificed a pawn but good technique in the end game by George Ellison saw him emerge as the winner.

Doug Williams was not up to his usual form and he lost quickly to Paul Evans.

Dennis Davies' position collapsed rapidly against Phil Copeland's opening play.

Abigail Pritchard, the English Under 14 Girl Champion who scored well recently for England on international duty in Turkey, proved too strong for Pat Coleman.

Rapidplay KO Cup

Bispham v Lytham Ex 1  4 - 4

What a result!  Completely outgraded on all boards, Bispham's chances must have been rated zero.  However, they held the strong Lytham side to a draw and go through to the semi-finals by virtue of the handicapping system.

Division A

Lytham Ex 1 v Preston 1  ½ - 4½

Lytham's powerful side came up against an even stronger Preston side even though Preston's top board, Brett Lund, was unavailable.  Captain John Cooper saved the whitewash with an early draw against the German, Dmitri Schechter.

Doug Williams had white pieces against Malcolm Peacock - he lost a pawn early on and then succumbed to a vicious K-side attack.  Ricky Lord, standing in for Phil Copeland, faced the experience Connor Reaney and put in a decent performance before losing.

Phil  Raynor lost a pawn early on to Colin Leitch and this proved decisive with Colin martialling through a passed pawn, after putting Phil's minor pieces into unco-ordinated positions.  The last game to finish was Leo Ainsworth (Lytham) versus Bob Taylor.  Bob eventually won an attacking game in the allegro finish.

Division B

Preston 3 v Poulton 1  2½ - 1½

This was a closely fought match.

Division C

Lytham Ex 4 v Preston 4  ½ - 3½

Bispham v Poulton 3  3½ - ½

Poulton's young players faced a Bispham side who are showing good form this season so there was no disgrace in this defeat.
