Division A
Preston 1 v Lytham Ex 1 4½ - ½
Preston 1 clinched the title with this dismantling of a fairly strong Lytham side. Preston fielded a team of super strength including Lytham's former top board, Peter Jowett. For Lytham, Doug Williams was the first to fall after just fifteen moves against Peter Jowett. He was in serious difficulties and forced to resign. John Cooper started well against Brett Lund but missed an opportunity to punish his opponent for some risky opening moves. Brett Lund came back in style winning the exchange and the end game. Leo Ainsworth and Phil Raynor were both unable to contain more illustrious opponents, Malcolm Peacock and Bob Taylor respectively. Lynne Morrison saved the whitewash - she outplayed the Preston Captain, graded 30 points higher than herself. Although two pawns up in the end game her king was trapped on the back rank and she had to accept a draw.
Division B
Preston 3 v Blackpool 2 1 - 3
The title is on the knife-edge after this win for Blackpool 2. Blackpool 2 and Lytham 2 are neck and neck with one match each to play.
Division C
Bispham v Preston 4 1 - 3
Bispham suffered their first loss of the season and with it the chance to clinch the title. Bispham's top board, Blaine McGrady, continued his successful season with another win to record an unbeaten run of eight wins and one draw.
Poulton 3 v Bispham 2 - 2
Bispham only required a draw to become Champions but Poulton's youthful side gave them a fright! There were well deserved wins for Connor Heelis and Judd Bennett. This is Bispham's first ever title win.
Preston 4 v Lytham Ex 4 3½ - ½
Preston 4's Chris Riley has won his last six games while Lytham's Allan Wilson has been unbeaten with three wins and three draws. They played together in this match with the result being a draw.
Challenge Cup
Lytham Ex v Bispham 7 - 1
It is nice to see a team from the lower divisions entering the prestigious Challenge Cup competition. Bispham have nothing like the resources of the Lytham club so the result was academic. Playing against such strong opposition must be beneficial for the Bispham team - experience is everything!
