Blackpool and Fylde League Report from 20090401 to 20090430
Division B
Poulton 2 2-2 Blackpool
Division B
Preston 3 1-3 Lytham 2
The experienced Lytham side ended Preston`s hopes of winning the division with this emphatic win. The away side`s battling qualities were shown fully by Lynne on Board 2, grimly defending an awkward position as black against Paul
O'Mara's favourite Qxd4 Sicilian. Leo and Phil Raynor capitalised on careless play by their opponents. Board 4 was a quick draw.
Division B
Preston 3 2.5-1.5 Blackpool
Preston 3 ensured second place in the division with this exciting victory over Blackpool.
On Board 1, Martin Mitchell (white) overcame Geoff Pennington`s QGA, the attack on the black king was swift and decisive.
Next to finish, on 3, regular foes Jon Wright and Kenny Quinn fought out a lively draw.
On 2, Chris Riley had stepped in at short notice (Neil Coward sportingly reset the clocks as the game got under way at 7.55) but produced a man-of-the-match performance to win in a rook ending.
So it all depended on Board 4 where Arulvel and Dennis Davies were fighting out a B v N endgame. Arul`s accurate attacking play finally overcame Dennis`s stubborn resistance as the clocks ran down in the allegro.
Division A
Preston 1 3.5-1.5 Lytham 1
Division A
Lytham 1 2.5-2.5 Morecambe
John Cooper won a pawn against Glenn soon after the opening but he opened up the position for his 2 bishops
and exploited the long diagonal against his king. Paul Evans' game was first to finish against John Lyth who was deputising as captain in the absence of Norman Blade. Leo sacrificed a pawn and had to work hard to draw. Abi was too strong for Barry Bourn but he held on for 56 moves. Colin
Liddle played well to win against his opponent Nick Jameson who normally plays for Lancaster but has not played in this league before. Morecambe were very short of players for this match and would have had to default a board if
Nick had not played.
Challenge Cup
Poulton 4.5-3.5 Lytham
This was a very close and enjoyable match. Poulton were at full strength. For Lytham Abigail did well to beat the higher-rated Steven Gardner. Similarly Phil Raynor in drawing against Michael Parker. Despite losses on 3 and 8 Lytham had the better of the other 3 draws and might well have won all these. Lynne played well against Simon
Rogers but time-trouble intervened. Colin Liddle was very close to winning against George
Ellison who just hung on in a R and P endgame.

John Cooper was very lucky to draw
against Michael who emerged better after the opening and stood slightly better
at the end also. Malcolm outplayed George in the opening and middle game and won
in 43 moves without reaching the endgame. Malcolm's victory meant that he shared
the lead with me at the end of this round.
By beating John Regan Dennis Davies
notched up his third successive win and has achieved a plus score. Although we
don't normally have a grading prize this achievement clearly deserves one.
Abigail has been in great form recently and bounced back from her defeat by Tom
Fielding in round 4 by winning her game against Jon Wright. Pat Coleman sprung a
surprise in beating Phil Raynor after winning the exchange.
In spite of the extension granted by
John Cooper to allow the game between Tom and Oleg to complete, this has not
happened. In the judgement of the Controller, it is viewed that Tom made
more effort to get the game played than Oleg so he is awarded the full point.
This means that Tom finishes on 3.5 rather than the 2.5 originally posted.
The play off for first
place between John Cooper and Malcolm Peacock provided an exciting conclusion to
the season's championship. In the play off John Cooper had a slight
advantage which he could not transpose into a win: in a time scramble with
both players under great pressure, John's flag fell first leaving Malcolm the
new Fylde Champion. Malcolm last won the title in the 1985-86 season but
has consistently finished in the top three over a long period.
Congratulations are due to Malcolm
and also to Tom Fielding who has just pipped Abigail to the Fylde Junior
Champion title.
